About

Each summer, Yamashiro Onsen in Kaga stages Daidengaku over two days. Its source, dengaku, was a performing art that swept medieval Japan and then disappeared, leaving many mysteries behind. Nomura Manzo VIII brought it back to life for the present day with the help of researchers, musicians and dancers, shaping it into what is now called Daidengaku. On stage, pounding rhythms and dancing combine with glittering costumes, clear flute melodies and the flicker of torches. The performances are held on a purpose-built stage in front of Hattori Shrine in Yamashiro Onsen, and every seat requires a ticket. Because the show starts in the evening, you can wander the hot spring town first and then head over.
