About
Wajima Taisai is the umbrella name for the summer festivals of four shrines in four districts of central Wajima: Okitsuhime Shrine in Amamachi, Juzo Shrine in Kawai-machi, Sumiyoshi Shrine in Fugeshi-machi and Wajimasaki Shrine in Wajimazaki-machi. All four are cooling festivals held for the gods, and in this lacquerware town, dazzling kiriko lanterns lacquered from top to bottom roam the streets while the festivals run one after another. At Okitsuhime Shrine the mikoshi is carried from the beach into the sea, and children on the shore haul on ropes so that it sways back and forth between sea and sand; the longer this goes on, the bigger the catch is said to be. Juzo and Sumiyoshi shrines hold torch rites, and when the huge burning torch topples, young men fight over the sacred paper wands. Last comes Wajimasaki Shrine, where a mikoshi shaped like a sea bream races through narrow lanes with kiriko in its wake.
