About

In the Ukai district of Horyu, Suzu, this is one of the signature kiriko festivals of Noto. Kiriko are the giant lanterns carried at Noto's festivals, and seven take part here: six huge ones about 14 meters tall and weighing up to 2 tons, and one 6 meters high. Each of the big lanterns is borne by around 100 young people, setting off in the evening toward torches blazing offshore. Toward the end comes the kaichu ranbu, a wild dance in the sea in which the kiriko wade out and circle the torches as fireworks burst over the water behind them, the highlight of the night. The Hokkoku Fireworks Suzu Horyu display is held the same evening.
