About

Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine and Suwa Shrine hold this festival every year on August 26 and 27. Fujiyoshida's signature festival, it has more than 450 years of history and is counted among Japan's three great unusual festivals. On the afternoon of August 26, after the rites, two mikoshi, the Omyojin-san in the classic myojin style and the Mikage (Oyama-san) shaped like Mount Fuji, are carried out into the streets of Kamiyoshida. Around dusk, as they reach the otabisho, more than 100 great torches 3 meters tall, built in the shape of bamboo shoots, are lit one after another, and about 2 km of street glows with flame. On the afternoon of August 27 the mikoshi tour the town and return to the shrine, and the festival peaks as parishioners holding pampas grass offerings chase them around the grounds.
