About

Every August 15, Nanbu Town holds this big summer event, an unusual fire festival said to blend a Bon send-off fire for ancestral spirits, a memorial for the river and a mushi-okuri rite to keep insects away from the rice. It begins with the nage-taimatsu, when burning torches are thrown in. As the great torch lights the way for the spirits, lanterns are floated down the Fuji River. The peak comes when the rows of fires called hyakuhattai along both banks are lit all at once and the riverside turns to flame. In 2026, stage shows began in the afternoon, and the night went on with festival drumming, lantern floating, the lighting of the great torch and the hyakuhattai, before closing with fireworks and Bon dancing. The Nanbu Town Fire Festival Executive Committee organizes it.
