About

Held on the banks of the Fuefuki River in Ichikawamisato, this is the largest fireworks display in Yamanashi. Fireworks in Koshu Ichikawa are said to have started with the signal fires of the Takeda era. Jinzaemon, a master papermaker who came from Kyoto in the Heian period and taught washi-making in Ichikawa, was later enshrined at Shinmei Shrine, dedicated to the god of paper, and the Shinmei fireworks are said to have begun with a big display on July 20, the anniversary of his death. Counted among Japan's three great fireworks shows in the Edo period, the tradition once died out and was revived on August 7, 1989. About 20,000 shells go up before crowds of around 200,000 in a typical year, and the grand finale fills the whole sky. The venue is about a 10-minute walk from Ichikawa-Daimon Station on the JR Minobu Line.
