About
Held on Lake Yamanaka every year on August 1, Hokosai kicks off the summer run of fireworks shows held lake by lake across the Fuji Five Lakes. It began in the Taisho era as fireworks for remembrance and warding off misfortune, honoring and consoling those who died in the line of duty and giving thanks to the lake for its blessings so that no disaster would strike. The name is said to have been chosen by the district head of the time together with the journalist Tokutomi Soho and Horiuchi Ryohei, founder of Fuji Kyuko. The festival pairs a Shinto rite with the fireworks and is especially dear to the people of Yamanakako Village. Fireworks are launched from the lakeshore in the Yamanaka district, and stalls set up around the Yamanakako public parking area. There is no viewing seating.
